Rovernet is a service available to all current students, faculty and staff
of Michigan
Technological University at no charge. Providing and supporting Rovernet is a joint effort of many university
departments.
Rovernet is designed to allow you to take your laptop or PDA and "rove" around campus to gain access to network resources (such as the web and e-mail).
There are two components to RoverNet. The first component consists of Wireless "hot zones" (access points) which allow you to gain access at speeds up to 11 Mbps in 802.11b locations and up to
54Mbps in 802.11g locations. The second component consists of wired Ethernet locations which allow you to gain access at speeds of 10 Mbps from a wired network jack.
More on Wireless Connectivity
In order to fully utilize this service and gain access to the wireless network, you will need an SSL capable browser and a WiFi certified 802.11b or 802.11g wireless card for your laptop or PDA. You will then need to position yourself in close proximity to one of the many Wireless "hot zones" (access points) on campus. Once you have logged into the network, you will have the freedom of surfing the web and reading your e-mail, but without the wires.
Please note that wireless technology is not as secure as having a wired connection. Because of this fact, we recommend that you only use IPSec, SSL, or SSH for all communications. We especially recommend that you do not transmit important or confidential information such as PINs or credit card numbers over any wireless network unless you are using one of the aforementioned protocols.
More on Wired Connectivity
In addition to the freedom of wireless connectivity, RoverNet also provides individuals with the flexibility of accessing the University's network through network jacks located in a number of University commons areas on campus. In order to utilize this component of RoverNet, you will need an SSL capable browser, an IEEE 802.3 compliant Ethernet card, and an RJ-45 cable.
